2027 Toyota Tundra i-FORCE MAX: Power, MPG and What Toyota Has Confirmed

2027 Toyota Tundra i-FORCE MAX: Power, MPG and What Toyota Has Confirmed

Toyota introduced the updated 2027 Tundra on July 21, 2026, and the i-FORCE MAX hybrid carries forward alongside the standard twin-turbo V6. What makes this model year unusual is the gap between announcement and specification. Toyota confirmed the redesign, the technology, the grade lineup and the new Trailhunter package, then stated that complete specifications and pricing would follow in fall 2026.

This page separates the two. Everything below is labeled as either confirmed by Toyota for 2027 or carried over from the current generation and awaiting Toyota's restatement. If you are still deciding which Toyota fits, you can also browse the full Toyota lineup.

⚠ How to read the figures on this page

Performance, capability and fuel economy numbers below are Toyota's published current-generation specifications. Toyota has not restated them for 2027, so treat them as directional until the fall specification release.

Powertrain: How i-FORCE MAX Builds Its Output

A parallel hybrid built around a conventional 10-speed automatic

The i-FORCE MAX is a parallel hybrid. A motor-generator sits inside the bell housing between the 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 and the 10-speed ECT-i automatic, so gas and electric power both route through a conventional transmission rather than a CVT. Peak torque arrives at 2,400 rpm, which is why the truck pulls hard from a stop instead of waiting for the tachometer to climb.

Current-Generation i-FORCE MAX Specifications

Specification Figure
Engine3.4L twin-turbo V6 with electric motor-generator
Horsepower437 hp at 5,200 rpm
Torque583 lb-ft at 2,400 rpm
Transmission10-speed ECT-i automatic with sequential shift mode
Battery288-volt sealed nickel-metal hydride
Battery locationUnder the rear passenger seats
ChargingSelf-charging — no plug-in required

Why the battery chemistry matters

Toyota uses a sealed nickel-metal hydride pack rather than lithium-ion. Nickel-metal hydride is heavier for the energy it stores, but it holds up well under the repeated heavy load cycles a full-size truck sees and tolerates temperature extremes. The pack recharges through regenerative braking and engine output, so there is no wall charging and no owner maintenance routine attached to it.

Towing and Capability

Where the hybrid wins — and where the gas V6 still wins

Current-Generation Towing Ratings

Configuration Max Towing Notes
Limited i-FORCE MAX 11,450 lbs Highest hybrid rating in the lineup
i-FORCE MAX range 10,290–11,450 lbs Varies by cab, bed and drivetrain
TRD Pro i-FORCE MAX 11,130 lbs Off-road hardware trades some capacity
SR5 with i-FORCE gas V6 12,000 lbs Double Cab RWD with the 6.5-foot bed

⚠ Towing and Payload Disclaimer

Maximum towing and payload capacity figures are based on properly equipped vehicles and vary by configuration. Do not exceed any weight rating. See your owner's manual and the vehicle's door-jamb label for specific capacities.

The gas engine out-tows the hybrid at the top of the range. That surprises people, and it is worth understanding rather than glossing over: the hybrid hardware adds weight, and that weight comes out of the rating. What the hybrid returns is torque delivery, with 583 lb-ft available at low engine speed where a loaded trailer actually needs it.

Confirmed trailering hardware

  • Tow hitch receiver with 7-/4-pin connector, standard on every grade
  • TOW and HAUL drive modes built into the 10-speed transmission
  • Trailer Backup Guide with Straight Path Assist, available
  • Panoramic View Monitor with 360-degree overhead view, available
  • Aluminum-reinforced Sheet-Molded Composite bed that resists dents and rust
  • Fully boxed high-strength steel ladder frame with a wide rear frame member

EPA-estimated fuel economy figures are for comparison purposes only. Your actual mileage will vary depending on driving conditions, how you drive and maintain your vehicle, battery age/condition, and other factors.

Where the hybrid earns its efficiency

Below 18 mph under light throttle, the electric motor does most of the work and the gas engine can shut off entirely. Above 18 mph the V6 runs continuously for mid- and high-speed performance. That is why the system returns its biggest gains in stop-and-go traffic and suburban driving rather than sustained highway cruising.

Two related items on the current truck: the 32.2-gallon fuel tank is standard across the lineup, and an available active aero front splitter deploys automatically above 37 mph to smooth airflow under the chassis.

Grades and the New Trailhunter Package

Seven grades for 2027, plus a factory overlanding package

The 2027 Tundra is offered in seven grades. Toyota has not yet published which of them pair with the i-FORCE MAX hybrid for 2027.

What the Trailhunter package adds

Trailhunter is a package built on the SR5 grade, not a separate grade. Toyota positions it as a more attainable route into factory overlanding capability. Confirmed contents:

  • Michelin LTX Trail 265/70R18 tires
  • Old Man Emu upgraded suspension
  • Front recovery hooks
  • Additional underbody protection
  • Multi-Terrain Select and Crawl Control
  • Locking rear differential
  • Bronze-colored wheels and Trailhunter badges

⚠ One caveat worth stating plainly

The i-FORCE MAX hybrid currently starts at the Limited grade and is not offered on SR or SR5. Whether the SR5-based Trailhunter package can be combined with the hybrid for 2027 is one of the details Toyota has not published. If that pairing matters to you, our team can confirm it as soon as Toyota releases full specifications.

IIHS crash-test results

The IIHS named the 2026 Tundra crew cab a TOP SAFETY PICK. Its ratings apply to 2022 through 2026 crew cab models; the 2027 truck has not been rated.

How the Tundra rates against the segment

That award carries more weight than usual this year. Of all large pickups, only two earned any IIHS award for 2026: the Tundra crew cab and the Tesla Cybertruck. The Ford F-150, Ram 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 each failed to qualify, all for the same reason — a Poor rating in the updated moderate overlap test tied to rear-passenger restraint performance.

An important change for 2027

ToyotaCare scheduled maintenance is shorter on 2027 vehicles than it was on 2026 and earlier models, which carried 2 years or 25,000 miles. Toyota is phasing the new term in by model series, so confirm coverage for the specific truck you are considering. Roadside assistance is unchanged at 2 years with unlimited mileage.

Common Questions About the 2027 Toyota Tundra i-FORCE MAX

What shoppers ask most about the hybrid full-size truck

Does the 2027 Tundra i-FORCE MAX require plug-in charging?

No. It is a self-charging hybrid that never needs to be plugged into a wall outlet or charging station. The 288-volt nickel-metal hydride battery recharges while driving, using energy recovered during braking and surplus output from the twin-turbo V6.

What warranty covers the hybrid battery?

Toyota covers the hybrid battery for 10 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first, and that coverage transfers to subsequent owners. Other hybrid components are covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles.

Is Trailhunter a trim level?

No. Trailhunter is a package based on the SR5 grade. Toyota has not yet confirmed whether it can be paired with the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain for 2027.

What safety technology is standard?

Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 is standard on every 2027 Tundra grade, including pre-collision with pedestrian detection, full-speed dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beams, lane tracing assist, road sign assist and proactive driving assist.
