ℹ A Quick Note on the Name
Through 2024 this car was sold as the Prius Prime. Beginning with the 2025 model year, Toyota renamed it the Prius Plug-in Hybrid and badged it PHEV. Same vehicle, current name — if you searched for a 2027 Prius Prime, this is it.
How Far Does the 2027 Prius Plug-in Hybrid Go on Electricity?
Up to 44 EPA-estimated miles of all-electric range before the gas engine ever starts
The gap in electric range between grades comes down to wheels. Larger wheels add rotating mass and rolling resistance, which trims a few miles off the EPA rating.

What the Extra Money Buys
Stepping above the SE trades electric range for equipment. XSE adds 19-inch wheels, SofTex-trimmed seats with an eight-way power driver's seat, and Qi-compatible wireless charging. Nightshade layers on black-finish wheels, black badging, and an all-black interior with gray stitching. XSE Premium adds a 12.3-inch touchscreen, eight-speaker JBL Premium Audio, a fixed glass roof, and ventilated front seats — and is the only grade offered with the limited-availability 185W solar roof.
What Are the 2027 Prius Plug-in Hybrid MPG and MPGe Ratings?
127 MPGe on battery power, 52 MPG combined once the charge runs out
MPGe vs. MPG: What the Two Numbers Mean
MPGe — miles per gallon equivalent — measures how far the car travels on the electrical energy equal to one gallon of gasoline, and it applies while there is charge in the battery. MPG applies after the battery is depleted, when the car runs as a conventional hybrid. Even with an empty battery, the SE's combined rating keeps it among the most efficient cars sold in California.
EPA Efficiency Ratings by Grade
| Grade | Combined MPGe | City MPG | Highway MPG | Combined MPG |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SE | 127 | 53 | 51 | 52 |
| XSE | 114 | 50 | 47 | 48 |
| Nightshade | 114 | 50 | 47 | 48 |
| XSE Premium | 114 | 50 | 47 | 48 |

Recharging Without Plugging In
Driving in hybrid mode recaptures energy through regenerative braking during deceleration and coasting, putting a small amount of charge back into the battery without plugging in. It will not refill the pack the way a wall outlet does, but it is why the car stays efficient on a long trip after the electric range is gone.
How Long Does It Take to Charge, and What Do You Need at Home?
About 11 hours on a standard wall outlet, about 4 hours on 240V
Charging Methods and Times
| Charging Method | Full Charge Time | What It Requires |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 — 120V household outlet | About 11 hours | Nothing. The supplied dual-voltage cable plugs into a standard three-prong outlet |
| Level 2 — 240V | About 4 hours | A 240V circuit at home, or a public AC charging station |
| Level 3 — DC fast charging | Not supported | — |

💡 Do You Need a 240V Circuit Installed?
For most commuters, no. An 11-hour overnight Level 1 session restores full electric range before morning. A Level 2 circuit is worth installing if you drive the battery down more than once a day, or if you want a full recharge in an afternoon rather than overnight.
Why Level 2 Caps at About Four Hours
The onboard charger is rated at approximately 3.5 kW, and that ceiling — not the wall circuit — sets the maximum AC charging speed. A more powerful home charger will not make it charge faster.
No DC Fast Charging
The Prius Plug-in Hybrid accepts AC charging only, through a standard charge port. Because the battery is a fraction of the size of a full EV pack, the vehicle is engineered around overnight home charging rather than public fast-charging stops. You can leave it plugged in overnight without concern.
Solar Roof
A limited-availability 185W solar roof panel is offered on the XSE Premium grade. It charges the drive battery while the vehicle is parked and powers auxiliary functions while driving.
What Drive Modes Are Available?
Three powertrain modes and three drive profiles, controlled independently
Powertrain Modes
| Mode | What It Does | Best Used For |
|---|---|---|
| EV Mode | Runs exclusively on battery power while charge remains. Unlike many plug-in hybrids, it holds all-electric operation even under hard acceleration | Daily commuting and short trips |
| HV (Hybrid) Mode | Preserves the battery's state of charge and runs the 2.0-liter engine with the hybrid system | Highway stretches where you want to save EV range for later |
| Auto EV/HV Mode | Favors electric driving but brings the engine in when extra output is needed | Mixed driving, merging, and grades |
Drive Profiles
Three drive profiles adjust accelerator response independently of the powertrain mode:
- Eco — softens throttle response to stretch battery and fuel reserves
- Normal — balanced response for everyday driving
- Sport — sharpens power delivery
These profiles change response logic, not peak output.
What's New for the 2027 Model Year?
Added comfort and a new color; the powertrain, range, and charging carry over unchanged
- Dual-Zone HVAC, now standard on every grade — driver and front passenger set their own temperatures
- Inked, a new black exterior color joining Cutting Edge, Guardian Gray, Reservoir Blue, and the Nightshade-exclusive Karashi
- Five-year trial of Toyota's Connected Services suite
Electric range, charging times, battery capacity, and EPA efficiency ratings are unchanged from 2026.
How Does It Compare to the Older Prius Prime?
The leap happened with the 2023 redesign, not with the 2027 model year
Compared with the 2017–2022 generation, the difference is substantial.
Generation vs. Generation
| Specification | 2017–2022 Prius Prime | 2023–2027 Prius Plug-in Hybrid |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | 1.8-liter four-cylinder | 2.0-liter four-cylinder |
| Battery | 8.8 kWh | 13.6 kWh |
| Combined horsepower | 121 hp | 220 hp |
| Electric range | 25 miles | Up to 44 miles |
| 0–60 mph | 10.3 seconds | 6.6 seconds |
Efficiency Didn't Pay for the Performance
Higher energy density in the lithium-ion cells let Toyota fit a larger battery without sacrificing passenger or cargo volume, while combined output nearly doubled and acceleration improved by almost four seconds.

Common Questions About 2027 Prius Plug-in Hybrid Range and Charging
Answers to what shoppers ask most
Is the 2027 Prius Prime the same as the Prius Plug-in Hybrid?
Yes. Toyota retired the Prius Prime name after the 2024 model year and renamed the vehicle the Prius Plug-in Hybrid starting with 2025. The badging reads PHEV. Many shoppers still search for it as the Prius Prime.
Can you leave the 2027 Prius Plug-in Hybrid plugged in overnight?
Yes. Charging on a standard 120V outlet takes about 11 hours, so overnight charging is how the vehicle is designed to be used.
Does the 2027 Prius Plug-in Hybrid support Level 3 DC fast charging?
No. It accepts Level 1 (120V) and Level 2 (240V) AC charging only. A full Level 2 charge takes about four hours.
What charging equipment comes with the vehicle?
A dual-voltage charging cable is included. It plugs into a standard 120V grounded household outlet, so home charging requires no additional purchase or electrical work.
Which grade has the longest electric range?
The SE, at an EPA-estimated 44 miles. XSE, Nightshade, and XSE Premium are rated at 39 miles because they run larger 19-inch wheels.
How does outdoor temperature affect electric range?
Mild conditions produce range closest to the EPA estimate of 44 miles on the SE grade. Extreme heat or cold can temporarily reduce range, largely because of added climate-control demand on the battery.
Can you drive it once the battery is empty?
Yes. When electric range reaches zero, the vehicle transitions to hybrid operation and runs on the gasoline engine and hybrid system, returning an EPA-estimated 52 MPG combined on the SE grade.
