COOLING SYSTEM SERVICE AND REPAIR
Overheating of the engine is considered one of the most common causes of mechanical failure on the road. It can cause excessive damage to the engine and the transmission. It does this by circulating a mixture of coolant and water through the engine. Maintaining the vehicle’s cooling system is one way you can prevent your engine from getting damaged and keep you on the road for longer.
Over time, the coolant mixture can get contaminated from rust and scale. The contamination can clog the cooling system and even damage it. To prevent this, a cooling system flush needs to be performed. A cooling system flush removes the coolant mixture and contaminants before replacing it with fresh water and coolant.
The cooling system of the car should be checked yearly. However, the level of coolant should be inspected monthly. Your vehicle needs to get a cooling system service if:
- The engine becomes hotter than usual shortly after starting it.
- The temperature increases gradually as you drive.
- If you notice orange or green fluid under the vehicle.
There are several things involved in cooling system service. They include:
- Coolant volume is checked together with pressure conditions.
The main duty of the cooling system is to take heat away from the engine and maintaining the preferred operating temperature. The coolant has to be circulated through the engine where most of the heat is generated and transporting it to the radiator where it can be cooled.
The coolant has to have a low freezing point, high boiling point and the ability to transfer heat. The coolant should also have certain additives that will prevent corrosion and rust from occurring in the cooling system.
The coolant still has a low boiling point. However, to increase it, the coolant is pressurized. Part of the cooling system service is to ensure that the pressure conditions are maintained, and the volumes are not low for the cooling process to be efficient.
- The radiator cap is checked ensuring it fits well and is functioning.
If the radiator cap does not fit, it should be replaced with a new one from the manufacturer. The cap ensures the coolant is kept under pressurized conditions and this is not achieved when it stops working.
- Radiator hoses are checked ensuring they are not worn, cracked or disintegrated.
The radiator hoses are inspected to ensure they are not worn out. If there are any problems being seen as a bulging hose, cracked or worn out hose, the hose should be replaced immediately with the correct one from the manufacturer.
The hose should be placed in the same way the previous hose was in the car. Ensure there are no obstructions when placing the hose to ensure it does not get damaged. When the hose is being replaced, new clamps will be used. A pressure test will also be performed to ensure the coolant is not leaking from the hose and it has been placed properly.
- Engine belts are inspected and replaced if necessary.
The belt should be inspected if it is worn. The belt usually has a certain life expectancy date after which it is to be replaced.
