What is Uninsured Motorist Insurance?

2019 Toyota Avalon Driver

Every state in the U.S. other than Florida requires all drivers to have bodily injury liability insurance. Property damage liability insurance is also required. Unfortunately, this does not mean that every driver you encounter on the roads of Van Nuys and Sun Valley is fully insured. This is why you may want to consider uninsured motorist coverage. What does the uninsured motorist coverage cover? This coverage is beneficial if you are involved in a collision where the other driver involved is not insured. It can also help if the other driver takes off following an accident. Learn more with the finance department at North Hollywood Toyota today.

The Basics of Uninsured Motorist Insurance

What happens if you are involved in a collision but you are not the driver at fault? The next step of the process is to file a claim with the at-fault driver’s insurance company. You do not want to be on the hook for car repairs, medical bills, and lost wages especially when you did not cause the accident. However, if the other driver involved is not insured, the process becomes a bit more complicated.

If this happens, you will have to pay out-of-pocket for those expenses that normally would be covered. In some cases, the other driver involved may still be generous enough to take care of those expenses for you, but if not, or if it was a case of hit-and-run, you may be out of luck. Having uninsured motorist coverage protects you from those unforeseen expenses.

What Does the Uninsured Motorist Coverage Cover?

Uninsured coverage is similar to regular liability insurance except for the fact that coverage goes into effect when the other driver involved is not adequately insured. There are two types of underinsured and uninsured motorist coverage:

  • Underinsured/Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury Coverage (UMBI): Covers lost wages, medical expenses related to your injuries (such as hospital visits and physical therapy), permissive drivers/your passengers, and coverage for bodily injuries caused by a hit-and-run driver
  • Underinsured/Uninsured Motorist Property Damage Coverage (UMPD): Covers damage to your vehicle that is caused by an underinsured or uninsured driver
