Toyota Corolla Gets a Great Hatchback with the iM

Scion had a great run for Toyota, producing some innovative designs beloved by fans. Although the brand has been shuttered, its legacy lives on in the 2017 Toyota Corolla iM, a Scion-inspired variant of the popular Corolla that provides owners with a comfortable daily driver with lots of great standard features.

When Toyota chose to close out the Scion brand in 2017, it was left with two recently designed vehicles and a popular sports car that the automaker still wanted to bring to market. Toyota rebadged the Scion iA sedan as the Yaris iA and rechristened the Scion iM as the Corolla iM. The sporty Scion FR-S became the Toyota 88.

The iM gives the Corolla brand an attractive hatchback option that’s fun to drive. The vehicle has several strengths that recommend it to new car buyers.

The vehicle’s biggest selling point is the abundant list of standard features it comes equipped with. New Corolla iM buyers will enjoy a central touchscreen, rearview camera, automatic headlights, and alloy wheels without paying a dime more for the vehicle. The abundance of standard features in the new Corolla iM give it a significant advantage over competing vehicles that offer less.

The Corolla iM also provides buyers with a plush, comfortable cabin. Seats are very comfortable and supportive, making morning commutes much less of a burden. The vehicle’s seats are easy to adjust and accommodate taller drivers well.

The iM also has some convenient storage options for buyers. Small item bins and storage areas are located throughout the cabin, making it easier for drivers and passengers to stow personal items. The Corolla iM also offers more cargo space than most hatchbacks, making it ideal for travelers or business commuters who have a lot of gear to haul.

The new vehicle also offers a very intuitive control panel. Climate and audio controls are easy to manage, and the vehicle’s 7-inch touchscreen is also responsive and easy to figure out.

With regard to performance, the Corolla iM is equipped with a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that provides smooth and quiet, if not particularly peppy, acceleration. Braking is firm, and the vehicle is quite responsive and nimble.

Early safety reviews show the Toyota Corolla iM getting impressive results. The vehicle has earned “Good” ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety regarding its moderate overlap front crash results and for its side impact results. Further testing is currently pending.

The Corolla iM is also a highly reliable vehicle, as is par for the course for Toyotas. J.D. Power and Associates gave the Corolla iM an almost perfect score in the company’s predicted reliability ratings.

The new Corolla iM also provides good value for budget-conscious consumers. At a starting MSRP of around $20,788, the Corolla iM is a great bargain, especially when compared to competitors like the Mazda 3.
