Toyota’s FT-4X Concept Is “Casualcore”

One of the biggest challenges car buyers face is finding a vehicle that is right for all the aspects of their lives. A small sedan or energy-saving hybrid might be right for the daily commute to a 9 to 5 job at the office, but what about drivers who want to venture out on the weekend and spend some time in nature? When making a single choice from all the cars available at the car dealerships in Los Angeles, getting a perfect fit may come down to a choice between what is practical and what you really want to drive.

The Toyota FT-4X concept car is a potential solution for those drivers who aren’t prepared to make that choice. The car is being dubbed “Casualcore” by the manufacturer, a name which reflects city drivers who like to venture out into nature but not to the degree that hardcore off-roaders do.

Unlike the FJ Cruiser, the FT-4X concept is equipped for milder adventures and spur-of-the-moment outings that even the most dignified city dwellers like to engage in from time to time. The car is made on the same Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform as the Prius and C-HR, and its fun design makes it ideal for young drivers and their parents who don’t want them to take their ventures too far.

Unique Features of the FT-4X Concept Car

Some of the features of the car put you in mind of a Transformer, serving double duty, depending on where and how it is being driven. For example:

  • Door handles that are also water bottles.
  • A sleeping bag that is situated between the seats as an armrest.
  • A ceiling-mounted flashlight as a dome light.

Built-in shelves in the dashboard would be helpful for trips to the beach. Place wet clothes there and point the tubular heating vents on them and get them dried on your way back home. The removable boom-box style audio system will also make a great companion for entertainment that goes with you to the beach or wherever the party may be!

There are lots of notable features on the exterior, too. A split tailgate can be used to swing outward like doors or lifted up together to act as a hatchback. A storage space hidden beneath a sliding rear floor gives the driver room to stash gear and be prepared for those impromptu outings like a day at the golf course or a picnic in the park.

The popularity of the concept is what will determine whether the FT-4X ends up being sold at the Toyota dealers in Southern California or whether it just becomes another idea that never makes it to production. Although true off-roaders aren’t likely to be lining up for a vehicle that they consider to have something less than the options they already have, particularly the FJ Cruiser, it is important to keep in mind the audience being targeted with the “casualcore” concept.

The FT-4X has a number of features that will appeal to drivers of all ages who live in the city but who want a vehicle that they can depend on to drive over unpaved roads. The vehicle is a little bit country and a little bit city, just like a lot of drivers who may have trouble finding the right vehicle to meet all of their driving needs.
