Toyota Vios to Hit Indian Markets in 2018

The Toyota Vios may not be as well-known to Westerners as the Camry or the Corolla, but that hasn’t stopped it from becoming a popular, well-regarded vehicle in the brand’s lineup in its own right.

Vios, available primarily in East Asia and other developing markets, embodies all of Toyota’s best qualities: It’s a reliable, affordable compact sedan that is convenient to drive while also being tough enough to withstand whatever the average family needs to put it through in order to get where they’re going.

The model is already in its third design generation, and anticipation for the newest iteration to hit new markets has been high. On that front, we’ve got some good news for Indian Toyota lovers: A version of the Toyota Vios, based on the 2017 iteration that recently launched in Thailand, will be showcased at 2018 Auto Expo and will then go on sale in Indian markets starting in April of that year.

What Makes the Vios Such a Big Deal?

Don’t let the fact that the Vios is marketed to developing markets lead you to believe that it’s a substandard vehicle that wouldn’t cut it in the U.S. or Europe. On the contrary, Vios is one of Toyota’s best models of the 21st century, and it is one of many Toyota vehicles designed primarily to serve markets outside the U.S.

Toyota is, after all, still a Japanese company at heart, meaning its home sphere naturally extends to countries like Thailand, Vietnam, and other Eastern countries; North America is hardly the only place in the world where Toyota has a big footprint.

With regards to the Vios, in particular, excitement has been building around it since its third generation was recently revealed. Like the company’s perennial bestseller the Camry, the Vios has undergone an amazing transformation, with a new visual design that gives it a look similar to what consumers expect from a fancy sports car than what they expect from a solid, affordable family car.

Just like the new version of the Camry that was unveiled at this year’s Detroit Auto Show had the American car press buzzing, the same is happening across the Pacific with the new, sleek, sophisticated-looking Vios. This is the version of the Vios that is expected to arrive at Indian dealerships in 2018, which is one of the reasons there’s been so much anticipation.

In addition to the visual redesign, we have some information on technical specs. The standard version will include a 1.5-litre petrol engine that generates 106 bhp and 140 Nm of peak torque; additionally, the Indian market will also have the option for a 1.4-litre similar to the one in the Toyota Etios. Safety features include ISOFIX mounts for child seats, dual airbags, and ABS with EBD.
