Toyota Vastly Expanding Its Hybrid Line-Up

Auto consumers will forever remember Toyota as the car manufacturer that made hybrids mainstream with its U.S. launch of the Prius in the early 2000s. Now Toyota is set to capitalize on the good fortune it’s had with the Prius line by expanding its line-up of hybrid vehicles.

The company recently greatly expanded its hybrid models, adding a hybrid version of the Sienta minivan, launching the fourth-generation Prius, and introducing hybrid versions of the RAV4, Corolla, and other vehicles.

Worldwide, Toyota now sells 33 hybrid passenger car models and one plug-in electric hybrid. Toyota now seeks to add even more hybrids to its product line and sell more of them in its U.S. market. As a result, Toyota dealers in Southern California will soon have even more great green vehicles for their consumers to choose from.

Although some might question Toyota’s strategy in introducing more hybrids at a time when gasoline prices have hit decade lows, the automaker’s plan is sound and far-sighted. While gas prices are currently low, worldwide demand continues to increase, and it is only a matter of time before market forces cause the cost of fuel to rise. OPEC recently signaled that it would cut production to boost prices, and geopolitical events in Russia and the Middle East will also likely contribute to an increase in prices.

Toyota also recognizes that gas prices aren’t the only motivating factor behind hybrid vehicle purchases. The general public is becoming more conscious of environmental issues and willing to make changes to promote a healthier environment. Lawmakers are also increasingly concerned about climate change and increased regulation of carbon emissions is highly likely. As a result, demand for hybrid vehicles remains strong. Toyota recently sold its nine millionth hybrid vehicle – a major milestone for the company.

Toyota’s 2016 & 2017 U.S. Hybrid Line-Up

For car consumers shopping Toyota dealers in Southern California to find a new hybrid vehicle, here are the great products on offer for the 2016 and 2017 model years:

  • Camry Hybrid – The Camry has long been a strong seller for Toyota, and the Japanese automaker has high hopes for the hybrid version of the popular sedan. The new Camry Hybrid offers a quiet, comfortable ride, good performance, and ample seating. The Camry Hybrid is powered by a 2.5 liter four-cylinder gas engine mated with an electric motor. The gas engine and electric motor produce a combined 200 horsepower, and the vehicle gets a combined city/highway fuel economy of 40 miles per gallon.

Camry Hybrids were first introduced in 2007, and the vehicle has received substantial upgrades since then. The latest version has seen an increase in performance and more available space inside the vehicle’s cabin. The new Camry Hybrid also benefits from a new, more user-friendly infotainment system that makes controlling audio, information, and navigation easier than ever.

  • Avalon Hybrid – Toyota recently introduced a hybrid version of its full-sized sedan, the Avalon. The Avalon Hybrid shares many of the most popular features of its traditional version, including a posh interior, lots of trunk space, and exceptional amenities. The Avalon shares the same powertrain as the Camry, and gets about 40 mpg in combined city and highway driving. The Avalon Hybrid’s performance is impressive – it can go from zero to 60 in 7.7 seconds, which is just one second slower than the V6 version of the Avalon.

The Avalon handles well on the road, with firm, responsive steering and a quiet, smooth ride. The Avalon has plenty of amenities – its base level XLE Premium package offers keyless ignition and entry, dual-zone A/C, leather seats, a rearview camera, and more.

  • Toyota Highlander Hybrid – The 2016 Toyota Highlander Hybrid offers plenty of space for families in need of cargo-hauling room. While the conventional gasoline V6 Highlander gets just 20 miles per gallon in combined city and highway driving, the Highlander Hybrid gets 28 mpg in combined fuel economy.

The Highlander Hybrid is powered by a 3.5 liter V6 gas engine mated with multiple electric motors and a battery pack. The gas engine and electric motors generate 280 horsepower. The Highlander Hybrid has an all-wheel drive and a continuously variable automatic transmission.

Although the Highlander is a large vehicle, it handles surprisingly well. The vehicle offers good acceleration and offers a comfortable ride. The Highlander Hybrid has a stylish interior, with quality surfaces and upholstery, and attractive color designs. The Highlander Hybrid is also a very safe vehicle, earning a perfect five-star overall crash rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

  • Rav-4 Hybrid – The RAV4 Hybrid is a new entry into Toyota’s hybrid line-up. The most fuel-efficient all-wheel-drive hybrid vehicle, the RAV4 gets a combined city/highway fuel economy of 33 mpg. The RAV4 Hybrid is powered by a 2.5 liter four-cylinder gas engine mated with electric motors in the front and rear. The gas engine and electric motors produce 194 horsepower. The RAV4 typically operates in front wheel drive, but when conditions are slippery the rear wheels engage to provide added traction.

The RAV4 offers a variety of neat features, including a seven-inch touchscreen, the Entune infotainment system, and an attractive, quality interior. The RAV4 Hybrid gets good safety reviews, earning a perfect five-star overall crash rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

  • Prius – Toyota’s most recognizable hybrid model is back for 2016 with a full redesign. The new Prius has a sleeker, more aggressive look for the exterior, and a lower and wider stance that makes the vehicle more capable of absorbing bumps. The Prius is a fuel economy king, as it gets a combined city/highway fuel economy of 56 mpg.
  • Prius C – The Prius C hatchback provides drivers with the convenience of a hatchback and several other features that they’ll love. The Prius C is the smallest and least expensive of the Priuses, but it’s no slouch. The vehicle gets 50 mpg in city and highway driving, and is quite nimble on the road. The vehicle has a convenient dashboard layout and several creature comforts consumers will enjoy, such as a top-quality audio system and easy smartphone integration. Although it’s small, the vehicle does provide a nice amount of head and leg room for drivers and passengers.
  • Prius V – The Prius V is the wagon version of the Prius and is perfect for families who want an eco-friendly vehicle with plenty of kid and cargo-hauling room. The Prius V pairs a 1.8 liter four-cylinder gas engine with electric motors and produces 134 horsepower. The vehicle gets about 42 mpg in combined city and highway driving.
  • Prius Prime – The Prius Prime is the plug-in hybrid version of the Prius. The Prime has a 22 mile all-electric range before it needs re-charging. The electric engine is mated to a 1.8 liter four-cylinder engine and is quite fuel efficient. The Prime’s exterior look is differentiated from other Priuses with a number of features such as quad LED headlights, and a curved glass hatch and LED taillights. The Prime has a whiz-bang 11.6 inch tablet-style interface on the interior that makes vehicle and entertainment management easy.
