Toyota’s already excellent reputation for eco-friendliness just got a big bump when the Japanese automaker was named the top green company by Carbon Clean 200. Southern California residents seeking a fuel efficient vehicle from a manufacturer committed to sustainability need look no further than their Los Angeles Toyota dealership.

Toyota was No. 1 on the Carbon Clean 200 list, which ranked 200 big corporations. Other companies in the top five included Siemens, Johnson Controls, Schneider Electric, and Panasonic. Toyota was the only automaker to make the top 10 in the Carbon 200 list. Tesla was No. 17 on the list.

Toyota Tops Green Company

The list ranks companies based on green energy revenues. To qualify, companies must have a market capitalization of $1 billion and generate 10 percent of their revenues from clean sources.

The list is sponsored by As You Sow, a non-profit organization advocating for corporate responsibility; and Corporate Knights, a market research company. The aim of the list is to provide environmentally-conscious investors with a list of eco-friendly companies where they can place their money.

Toyota’s Green Efforts

Perhaps the most visible symbol of Toyota’s commitment to environmental responsibility is its Prius line of hybrid vehicles. The Prius is the most recognizable hybrid vehicle in the world and was the first commercially viable hybrid car. Toyota has sold more than 9 million of the vehicles, which use battery power and energy generated by braking to supplement their gasoline engines in order to save fuel.

Building Priuses isn’t Toyota’s only contribution to a better environment, however. Toyota is engaged in a wide variety of initiatives to reduce its environmental footprint and be a great corporate advocate for eco-friendly corporate operations.

The company is currently engaged in the Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050, which is a long-term plan for environmental responsibility and sustainability. The challenge identifies six goals:

  • Reducing new vehicle CO2 emissions to zero.
  • Reducing CO2 emissions produced during the life cycle of its vehicle to zero.
  • Reducing CO2 emissions produced by its manufacturing facilities to zero.
  • Minimizing and optimizing water usage. Toyota is evaluating how its facilities use water and finding ways to use this precious resource as efficiently as possible.
  • Establishing a recycling based society and systems. Toyota is making a number of efforts to promote recycling, not just in its facilities but also throughout the world.
  • Establishing a future society in harmony with nature. Toyota is sponsoring a number of educational and other initiatives, including tree plantings, to encourage environmentally-conscious lifestyles and habits.

Toyota No. 1 auto manufacturer

These ambitious goals show that Toyota is deeply committed to conducting its operations in a responsible manner and protecting the environment. Consumers have responded to Toyota’s push to become a green automaker, and the company’s continued reputation for producing excellent automobiles, by making Toyota the No. 1 auto manufacturer by sales.
